Long Beach Island countertops usually have to go up two flights of stairs. The island is six towns on one road, Long Beach Boulevard, and the housing splits by end: Loveladies, Harvey Cedars and Barnegat Light at the north are low density and expensive, with custom homes on big dune lots, while Ship Bottom, Brant Beach, Beach Haven and Holgate to the south are denser, with 1950s and 1960s capes and ranches on fifty foot lots. After Sandy in 2012 the island rebuilt upward: a house that was gutted came back raised on pilings, and most new LBI homes put the living room and the kitchen on the top floor for the view, with the bedrooms below. That reverse living plan is why an LBI kitchen is a big island, a long run under the windows and a bar for the deck, and why the stone gets planned around the stairs. The capes that survived are getting their walls opened and a peninsula added where the table was.
We work with LBI homeowners and with the builders doing the raised new builds from Loveladies to Holgate. A new house means the kitchen, bar and bath stone picked together so the house reads as one design; a cape that is staying means a real kitchen in a footprint built for a smaller family. Granite on LBI goes on the island that feeds the whole family every night in July. It is quarried stone, very hard, and it does not mind a hot pot from the deck grill or a cooler dragged across it. A soft grey or a honed black granite suits the white and driftwood palette of the raised new builds, and a lighter speckled granite brightens a Beach Haven cape with one window. It is porous, so a sealer gets refreshed when water stops beading, about once a season in a summer house.

Engineered stone is non-porous and never sealed, so sunscreen, wine and juice wipe up clean between guests, and the color is uniform across a long run and the bar. Do you template upstairs kitchens on LBI?
Yes. Most new LBI homes put the kitchen on the second or third floor, so we look at the stair turns before fabrication and split a long run where a seam hides best, so each piece gets up to the kitchen cleanly. We settle that at templating.
What should I bring to the showroom for an LBI project?
The builder's kitchen drawing or your own sketch with rough measurements, a cabinet door sample or color, and a photo of the flooring. If you have a picture of a kitchen you like, bring it. We find stone that fits the look and go over edges and seams.
Can you template an LBI house while we are on the mainland for the winter?
Yes. Once the cabinets are set, we template with your builder or a key holder letting us in, and we go over the layout and the stone with you by phone or email so you can approve it from home.
Which countertop holds up best in an LBI summer rental?
Quartz. Non-porous and stain resistant, it wipes clean between guests and never needs sealing. Granite is the durable natural option. A mid tone hides the marks of a busy week better than a bright white.
Can a 1960s Beach Haven cape get an island?
In most of the houses we see, yes, after the kitchen is opened to the living room. Where the room is narrow a peninsula does the same job, and the stone for either usually comes in one piece. We look at the layout at the template visit.
Do you work from Barnegat Light to Holgate?
Yes, the whole island. From a Loveladies custom build to a Holgate cape, every top is templated to fit, and the pieces are sized for whatever stairs the house has.
