A backsplash is really two decisions: how far up the wall it goes, and whether it comes off the same slab as the counter. A standard splash is a short band sitting on top of the countertop, four inches or so, and its job is to keep the wall clean. A full height splash runs from the counter to the underside of the wall cabinets, usually behind the range, and its job is to be looked at. Cut from the same slab as the countertop, the veining carries straight up across the joint with no grout line to interrupt it, and that is the version most people are picturing when they picture a stone kitchen. There is a practical argument as well. A slab splash has no grout, so there is nothing behind the range to scrub or reseal, and splatter comes off it the same way it comes off the counter. A full height run also uses more of the slab, so the layout gets planned before anything is cut, and when veining is meant to continue from the counter up the wall we buy for that up front. What is the difference between a slab backsplash and tile?
A slab backsplash uses a single piece of stone that matches your countertop with no grout lines, for a clean, seamless look that is easy to wipe down. Tile has more visible seams and grout to keep up with. Many homeowners like a slab because it reads as one continuous surface. We can show you both.
What is a full height backsplash?
A full height backsplash runs from the countertop all the way up to the underside of the cabinets, usually behind the range or sink. It makes a bold focal point and protects more of the wall. A standard backsplash is a shorter band above the counter. We build either.
Should the backsplash match my countertops?
That is up to you. We can install one large slab that flows seamlessly from the counter up the wall, or choose a complementary stone or pattern for contrast. Both look great, and we help you decide based on the rest of the kitchen.
