The town was settled in 1693 and Somers Mansion on Shore Road dates to the 1720s, but almost all the housing is from the twenty years after 1960, when the population roughly doubled: capes, ranches and colonials on the streets between Shore Road and New Road, and bayfront homes along Bay Avenue and near the marinas. The condos came later, along Bay Avenue and around Kennedy Park at the foot of Broadway, with kitchens built as one straight run and a bar. From Bay Avenue and the marinas, Shore Road north to Mill Road, then Tilton Road to the Pike, is the other way in. Either route is about ten minutes, with parking at the door.
