A stone fireplace is three pieces doing three different jobs. The facade is the face around the opening, and it is the part the room actually looks at. The hearth is the floor in front of it, and it has to run past the opening on the front and the sides rather than stopping flush with the firebox. The mantel is the shelf, and how far it can project depends on how high above the opening it sits, which is why the shelf gets designed around the firebox instead of chosen first and fitted after. We build elegant fireplaces from quartz, marble or granite, whether you are starting fresh or refacing a dated brick surround.
Refacing is the request we hear most. A brick surround from the 1970s does not have to be torn out to stop looking like the 1970s. Slab stone goes over the existing masonry, the mantel and hearth are rebuilt to suit it, and a living room changes character without a demolition. Because we fabricate the pieces rather than order them off a shelf, we can go looking through our suppliers for stone that ties back to the kitchen countertops or a bath vanity elsewhere in the house, so the fireplace reads as part of the home instead of a feature dropped into it.
Stone has framed fires for as long as houses have had them, and natural marble and granite take the warmth off a firebox without complaint. Quartz is the one exception worth naming out loud: it is bound with resin, so we use it where its clean, even color earns its place and keep it clear of direct high heat. A fireplace is more than a facade, so we design the mantel and hearth to match and keep proper clearances around the firebox for a result that is beautiful and sound.
